Personality: Chiaro is from a background where he had seen it all at a rather young age, but he hasn't become bitter or jaded about it. Rather, he tends to take life as it comes, doing what he has to when he has to. Most of the time, he's completely unruffled, and he will sometimes make wry, dry-witted observations about the more odd or foolish things he sees around him.

He often seems to have an upbeat demeanor, especially when around Cesare – those who saw the two of them together often said that Chiaro was the only one capable of keeping Cesare's darker moods at bay. He is fiercely protective of those he cares about, especially Cesare – one of the few things that would unravel his usually level-headed manner is to have his oldest friend fall into danger.

Chiaro tends to think not too much about what he has to do as an assassin – it's just a job, like anyone else in his family has had to do since the dawn of time. He does, however, get upset if he ends up accidentally harming an innocent bystander.

Appearance: Chiaro is tall, blond and stunningly good-looking, with bright blue eyes set in an almost girlishly pretty face. His build is that of a slender athlete, befitting the number of hours he's spent practicing with his sword. When he is on "missions" as Michelotto, he wears a plain, black cloth mask over his eyes and all-black clothing; otherwise, he favors tasteful casual attire, button-down shirts and creased pants when he's in a professional bodyguard capacity; T-shirts and jeans or chinos when relaxing.

Whenever acting as protector or assassin, he has his sword strapped at his side in an engraved silver scabbard that is a family heirloom and looks like it was time-warped in from an earlier century.

History: Chiaro was born into an organized crime family, the Michelotto, who have been notorious assassins since the Middle Ages. Children of the clan are taught use of weaponry from an early age; Chiaro learned how to use a sword shortly after he learned to walk.

His mother passed away when his age was in the single digits. His father supported both of them working day and night as an assassin; Chiaro began to accompany him on missions once he was in his teens, knowing that this was the destiny, and indeed the duty, of anyone born into their family.

Chiaro's father was hired by the Rovere family – enemies of the Borgias – to assassinate the eldest son of the Borgia famly, Cesare. When he failed to do so, he was kidnapped and held by the Roveres, who threatened to murder him if Chiaro didn't succeed at the job his father failed at. He set off to kill Cesare, but found out he couldn't do it, even for his father's sake. The boys began to talk, and found they got along, and before Chiaro knew it, he was accepting Cesare's help to break his father out of his captivity.

Unfortunately, the senior Michelotto was killed on a mission a short time later, and Chiaro accepted an offer to become Cesare's personal bodyguard, while still occasionally doing "Michelotto" missions, especially in the service of the Borgias. He got to know the whole family around that time, and he and Cesare became best friends, then more than friends. At the same time, Chiaro was also becoming close to Cesare's sister, Lucrezia, an often sad and lonely girl who he enjoyed cheering up.

Cesare was growing increasingly depressed over his family situation – his father, a cardinal who made no secret of his illegitimate children, disdained him and favored his much more physically and emotionally weak son, Juan. Chiaro suggested that they leave Rome and go somewhere else, and they picked Paris. They escaped there by train and settled into an apartment together, and for awhile, at least, they were happy.

This ended, unfortunately, when assassins from a rival clan to the Michelotto arrived in Paris. Chiaro, knowing they were after him and not wanting to put Cesare in danger, quietly slipped away and returned to Italy. He couldn't even tell Cesare where he was going, knowing Cesare would only follow him. Rather than go back to Rome, he headed for Pesaro, where Lucrezia was living, trapped in an unhappy marriage that she was more or less forced into by her father. She provided him with shelter, and the two of them had an affair.

Finally, when enough time had elapsed and a coalition of assassins he put together was able to deal with his family's enemies, he returned to Paris, only to find Cesare gone from the place where they once lived. He began searching for him, never dreaming that the trail would lead to a bordello . . .
